Nearly 2,000 runners cris crossed the University of Cincinnati campus Sunday as the department of athletics played host the inaugural Bearcats Dash & Bash.
The event consisted of a pair of races, a 5k through campus and an 18.19k that weaved through Campus, Clifton and Mount Storm Park. Thirteen hundred and twenty four runners took part in the 5k and 475 ran the 18.19k.
The event, which will be run annually on the first Sunday in October, was co-hosted by the Ohio Innocence Project. Proceeds from the race will benefit athletics scholarships and the OIP, which seeks to identify inmates in Ohio prisons who are actually innocent of the crimes they were convicted of committing. The Ohio Innocence Project to date has helped 23 individuals obtain their long-sought freedom, many of whom were on-hand Sunday to participate in the Freedom Walk, which took participants along the 5k course on UC’s campus.
The men’s 5k run was won by Nicholas Wuestefeld who crossed the line in 19:25 and the women’s race was won by Danielle Kearns who finished in 21:09.
UC women’s cross country coach Lara Crofford won the 18.19k in 1:13:56 while Josh Bokelman took home the title in the men’s event with a clocking of 1:07:38.
The 2017 Bearcats Dash & Bash will take place on Sunday, Oct. 1.
